Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride Treatment in Cordova, TN

You probably heard of how water is supplemented with fluoride. Toothpaste companies also advertise the presence of fluoride in their products. The reason is obvious: fluoride is great for dental health. At Arlington Dental in Cordova, we explain to our clients that fluoride is beneficial for its teeth strengthening effects.

Another major benefit of fluoride is that it can stop tooth decay. If there’s ongoing decay in one of your teeth, being exposed to fluoride can stop it. It won’t be able to reverse it, though. Fluoride treatments are done at the dentist’s office and are based on using high concentrations of fluoride.

The Procedure

You’ll be glad to know that at Arlington Dental, fluoride treatments only take a few minutes and a single visit. It’s as simple as applying fluoride to your teeth and removing it a few minutes later. The dose of fluoride has to be properly calculated, though.

That’s why we don’t advise people to perform these treatments at home. Using too much fluoride has side effects such as teeth pitting and staining. Using too little fluoride has no benefits. The correct calculation of the dose has to be done by a dentist. The calculation is based on age and sometimes weight.

Fluoride is applied to teeth using a brush, gel, or tray. It’s left there for absorption by teeth for a few minutes then removed. We recommend not eating, drinking, or rinsing your mouth for about 30 minutes after the treatment. This gives teeth more time to absorb the fluoride.

Who Needs Fluoride Treatments?

Fluoride treatments are most highly recommended for children. Children up to the age of 15 years are more vulnerable than adults to getting dental caries. Studies have shown that children who are exposed to fluoride at an early age usually have healthier teeth as adults.

Most insurance companies include fluoride treatments for children in their plans but not adults. Fluoride treatments aren’t expensive, even out of pocket. To find out the cost and if your plan covers this procedure, give us a call at any time, and we’ll be more than happy to help.
