What is an Oral Surgeon?
Oral surgeons are dentists that have an additional four years of specialized training. They have learned how to diagnose and surgically treat any defects that may occur to the jaw, mouth, teeth, and gums.
Why See an Oral Surgeon?
It’s common for patients to be referred to our Arlington Dental in Cordova by their family dentist for special cases.
You may be referred to see our dentists if you’ve been suffering from an impacted tooth or need to have teeth removed. At times, if a patient is suffering from oral cancer, they may undergo surgery to remove the tumor.
Types of Oral Surgery
This type of oral surgery occurs when one or more teeth are extracted. Depending on the needs of the patient, dental sedation may be administered. While some patients opt for local anesthetic, others may ask for heavier sedation.
Once the anesthesia has been applied, dental instruments are inserted between the tooth and the gums immediately surrounding the tooth. Force is applied to rock the tooth back and forth until it separates from the ligament that has been keeping the tooth in place. Occasionally, a tooth may be cut in smaller pieces before it is removed.
Wisdom Teeth Extraction
The third set of molars, or wisdom teeth, as they are commonly referred, can often endanger a person’s dental health. They may not have enough room in the mouth, and the eruption of wisdom teeth could cause crowding. At times, they may not erupt, but cause crowding in the roots of other teeth. This can cause further misalignment to the existing teeth.
